What is NEET (UG) and what is its purpose?

NEET (UG) stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate). It is a nationwide entrance examination in India for students who wish to study undergraduate medical courses such as MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BSMS, BUMS, and BHMS in medical, dental, and AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) colleges across the country. Qualifying in NEET (UG) is mandatory for Indian citizens, Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and Foreign Nationals intending to pursue undergraduate medical courses in India or abroad. The exam ensures a standardised selection process based on merit.

 

Who conducts the NEET (UG) exam and what is the role of NTA?

The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the NEET (UG) exam. The NTA's role includes registering candidates, setting the exam, conducting the exam in a fair and transparent manner, preparing the result based on the norms set by NMC/DGHS (for MBBS/BDS), by NCISM (for BAMS/BSMS/ BUMS) and by NCH (for BHMS), and declaring the All India Rank. However, the NTA has no responsibility regarding counselling or admission processes; these are managed by other designated authorities.

 

What is the syllabus and pattern of the NEET (UG) - 2025 exam?

The syllabus for NEET (UG) - 2025 is notified by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and is available on the NMC website. The exam pattern consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology). There are 45 questions each from Physics and Chemistry, and 90 questions from Biology. The total duration of the test is 3 hours (2:00 PM to 5:00 PM). Each correct answer is awarded four marks (+4), and one mark is deducted (-1) for each incorrect answer. No marks are awarded for unanswered questions (0).

 

What are the eligibility criteria for appearing in NEET (UG) - 2025?

To be eligible for NEET (UG) - 2025, candidates must have passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as compulsory subjects. There are specific qualifying examination codes outlined in the information bulletin that candidates need to refer to based on their qualifying examination. Indian Citizens/ Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) intending to pursue Undergraduate Medical Courses in a foreign Medical/ Dental Institute also need to qualify for NEET (UG). Candidates who have passed Class 12 from Open School or as private candidates shall not be eligible to appear for the 'National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test'.

 

What types of medical colleges and seats are available through NEET (UG)?

Through NEET (UG) - 2025, admissions are conducted for seats in various medical colleges and under different quotas, including All India Quota seats, State Government Quota seats, seats in Central Institutions/Universities/Deemed Universities, State/Management/NRI Quota seats in Private Medical/Dental Colleges, and Central Pool Quota seats. Admission to AYUSH courses (BAMS, BSMS, BUMS, BHMS) are also conducted via NEET (UG) scores.

 

What is the reservation policy for NEET (UG) and how does it apply to Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)?

The reservation policy for NEET (UG) includes reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes-Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD). A horizontal reservation of 5% seats is provided for PwBD candidates across all categories. Candidates claiming PwBD status must undergo assessment at designated disability certification centres and fulfil the criteria as per NMC guidelines. Specific disabilities considered include locomotor disability, visual impairment, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, mental behaviour, and disabilities due to chronic neurological conditions and blood disorders.

 

What documents are required during the NEET (UG) application process and what are the specified size limits for scanned documents?

During the application process, candidates need to upload scanned images of various documents, including their photograph, signature, left-hand thumb impression, Class X passing certificate, present and permanent address proof, and, if applicable, NRI/OCI/Foreigner certificate, PwD/PwBD certificate, and scribe-related documents. The specified size limits for these documents are as follows: photograph (10 kb to 200 kb), signature (4 kb to 30 kb), left-hand thumb impression (3 kb to 30 kb), Class X passing certificate (50 kb to 300 kb), address proof (50 kb to 300 kb), NRI/OCI/Foreigner certificate (50 kb to 300 kb), and PwD/PwBD certificate (50 kb to 300 kb). All documents must be clearly legible.

 

What items are prohibited inside the examination centre during NEET (UG) and what are the instructions regarding items allowed for candidates with diabetes?

A wide range of items are prohibited inside the NEET (UG) examination centre to ensure fairness and prevent cheating. Prohibited items include stationery items (geometry/pencil box, writing pad, pen drives), communication devices (mobile phones, Bluetooth devices, earphones), personal belongings (wallets, goggles, handbags, belts, caps), electronic devices (watches, bracelets, cameras), ornaments/metallic items, and outside food and beverages (opened or packed food, water bottles). Candidates suffering from diabetes are allowed to carry eatables like sugar tablets/fruits (banana/apple/orange) and transparent water bottles into the examination hall, but prior intimation is required.
